Why is perfume referred to as Eau de Toilette which translates to ';water of the toilet';?

there are many types of perfume and perfumes have many concentration of compounds here are some examples

Perfume extract (Extrait): 15-40% (IFRA: typical 20%) aromatic compounds

Eau de Parfum (EdP), Parfum de Toilette (PdT): 10-20% (typical ~15%) aromatic compounds. Sometimes listed as ';eau de perfume'; or ';mill茅sime';.

Eau de Toilette (EdT): 5-15% (typical ~10%) aromatic compounds

Eau de Cologne (EdC): Chypre citrus type perfumes with 3-8% (typical ~5%) aromatic compounds

Splash and After shave: 1-3% aromatic compoundsWhy is perfume referred to as Eau de Toilette which translates to ';water of the toilet';?
It's actually 'toilet water'. With a concentration in the region of one to six percent, 'toilette' water is a less concentrated fragrance than perfume. It is typically used in a body splash, spray mist, body lotion and after-shower products and is intended to be a light and short lasting fragrance.

Hence it's cheaper and more frowned upon.

And although toilette does actually mean toilet, there is another meaning in French, which is as follows:

'formal or fashionable attire or style of dress, a particular costume or outfit'

So the disambiguation points to Eau De Toilette being an accompaniment to an outfit (rather than bottled p1ss water!)Why is perfume referred to as Eau de Toilette which translates to ';water of the toilet';?
You're translation is very literal and doesn't take into account that the word toilette has several meanings.

If one uses the phrase';faire sa toilette';, toilette no longer refers to a toilet, but to a grooming ritual. In that sense Eau de toilette would translate into something more like ';grooming water';.
you are wrongly assuming that 'toilet' means lavatory. It usually does in today's parlance, but it has another (now rather old-fashioned) meaning, which is to do with grooming, cleaning, generally beautifying oneself - the name of the perfume comes from this origin, 'doing one's toilet'. (from the French toilette, I would imagine)
Toilette can also mean dressing oneslef, which still doesn't make that much sense. Anyway that means it's more watered down than perfumes that say ';eau de parfum'; which smell stronger and last longer (I didn't mean that to rhyme).
Becuase Toilet never used to mean the thing you crap in, it means the room, eau de toilette was invented before the toilet
because ';toilette'; used to refer to personal hygiene activities - not just going #1 %26amp; #2
because water in the toilet destroys all the obscene odours in the air, u know how when u flush the toilet the poo is gone and is replaced with clean water .. like how perfume covers up bad smells and instead gives a nice smell ..
Toilette is a very old term to describe your personal grooming etc...and was adopted by perfumiers.
It's a cheaper version of perfume with only half the strength of real perfume...
you can't whack a good whiff of a khazi
lol hahahahaha :-)
Because it's made in Toulouse.
