Why is perfume called eau de toilette when that means toilet water?

The toilet was where you took care of ALL of your business, not just going to the canWhy is perfume called eau de toilette when that means toilet water?
Because the word ';toilette'; never meant toilet in the sense of a john. Like ';lavatory'; it had to do with washing or ';freshening up'; - a euphemism perhaps, but it has lingered on.Why is perfume called eau de toilette when that means toilet water?
The original meaning of ';toilette'; is the routine of personal hygiene that most people perform each day. For many, that includes a dash of ';eau de toilette.';
